The Metal Gamer best of 2019

Holy moly what a year! When I started this list a few weeks ago I had over 150 albums written down on albums that I really enjoyed, more than any other year since I started this blog. Which is why I am doing a top 50 this time (and years onwards). Even with a limit on 50 it was bloody hard to cut the list down! That speaks volumes on how good year 2019 has been for metal, in my opinion the best in many years with every genre putting out killer albums. 2019 was a quite wild ride for me personally too as I became a father of a beautiful daughter we’ve named Hilde in December. With that it also means The Metal Gamer will slow down some in productivity for a while, as you might have already noticed. The Metal Gamer Community also got created in 2019 and has reached over 400 members in only a few months. Started doing interviews seem to have been a hit too as most of them got a lot of interaction where I got to interview bands such as Visceral Bleeding, Deranged, Enthroned and The Great Old Ones to name a few. Last but not least the first ever The Metal Gamer fanzine got published digitally (hopefully will manage to do one more this year), which was read by over 200 people within the first 48h! Major thanks for the support metal gamers and I hope to bring you more content for many years to come!

The Metal Gamer best of 2019

1. Finsterforst – Zerfall

One of my favorite bands of all time Moonsorrow hasn’t released an album since 2016 but what does that even matter when Finsterforst release their best album to date and in all honesty one of the best albums in the genre ever! Became a clear album of the year for me, no doubt about it. Released August 2nd via Napalm Records.

2. Wormwood – Nattarvet

Wow what beast this turned out to be! I wasn’t all in on Wormwood before but with Nattarvet they really knocked it out of the park and has released the best black metal album of the year. They even topped it off with a great live performance at Månegarm Open Air in August which solidified my love for this band. Very big surprise to me. Released July 26th via Black Lodge Records.

3. Vale of Pnath – Accursed

Wow what a journey Vale of Pnath has had! They’ve always been of my favorite techdeath bands, much do to their black metal influences, but they really knocked this one out of the park! A perfect five in my book and a crown jewel in their already great, and growing, discography. Released May 17th via Willowtip Records.

4. Equipoise – Demiurgus

The best album I heard first quarter of the year was Demiurgus by Equipoise. They’ve done everything right, it’s technical death metal at its peak and it’s not only good but also fun! I mean who just adds in a acoustic flamenco track for the sake of it? Equipoise does and it pays off! The first 5/5 of the year went to Demiurgus. Released March 8th via The Artisan Era.

5. The Great Old Ones – Cosmicism

The Great Old Ones are back with yet another stunning Lovecraftian atmospheric black metal album. They seem to be able to do no wrong and the band has only strengthen what is already a very strong discography. Grown on me throughout the year to eventually land in the top 5! Released October 22nd via Season of Mist.

Albums of the month: August

If August hasn’t been the best month of metal so far this year it’s damn near close. Because wow has this month brought us a bunch of great albums and album of the year contenders. In my top 5 I actually went back and forth between 12 albums, that’s how hard it was to choose and how good this month has been! Also you will notice most of these albums came out on the very same date, August 16th. I’ve never in my life witnessed so many quality albums dropping on the same day, madness! The Metal Gamer playlist is of course now updated to feature songs from all these albums mentioned.

Album of the month

Finsterforst – Zerfall

One of my favorite bands of all time Moonsorrow hasn’t released an album since 2016 but what does that even matter when Finsterforst release their best album to date and in all honest one of the best albums in the genre ever! Big album of the year contender for me. Released August 2nd via Napalm Records.

Runners-up

Shadow of Intent – Melancholy

I’ve always had a soft spot for Shadow of Intent and their debut was one of the earliest albums I ever reviewed. Melancholy is the most complete album in a band that’s looking to become a legacy within deathcore. Released August 16th as an independent release.

Hammerfall – Dominion

Talking about soft spots, Hammerfall has been my guilty pleasure for a long time. Being one of the first metal bands I ever heard (I would imagine many did start with power metal just like I did) they’ve had their ups and downs. Dominion also suffers from some ups and downs but when you release the best single the genre has seen in years with “(We Made) Sweden Rock” that alone is enough to grant the album a spot here. Not only that, for the most part Dominion features some of the best songwriting the band has ever had. The hammer is still solid steel! Released August 16th via Napalm Records.

Devourment – Obscene Majesty

The kings of slam are back and they are taking no prisoners! Such a filthy and brutal album it should come with a big warning label on how hard this hits. Released August 16th via Relapse Records.

Eternal Storm – Come the Tide

Eternal Storm surprises me big time with what’s one of the best melodic death metal albums you will hear all year! What a way to make a debut album with a big splash. Released August 23rd via Transcending Obscurity Records.

A Wake in Providence – The Blvck Sun || The Blood Moon (Deathcore)

I have a confession to make. I’d never heard A Wake in Providence since a few days ago when I saw they had dropped their new album The Blvck Sun || The Blood Moon. This American three-piece is back on one last standing original member, guitarist D’Andre Tyre, but that doesn’t stop A Wake in Providence to live on and with Adam Mercer on vocals and Jordan Felion on guitar joining him the band is complete (granted Anthony Adipietro did the drums for this album and isn’t in the band anymore). Having a quick play-through their previous album I found their more down-tempo debut Insidious: Phase II being a solid album but not anything special, but oh man would The Blvck Sun || The Blood Moon sweep my feet and make me surrender to their darkness.

They use their slower section a lot better this time around, to create an atmosphere of sweet darkness that brings you to submission. I also think Adam Mercer has taken the vocals to a whole new level, while Will Ramos sure did have a wide range of highs, lows and gutturals I didn’t really think they were on point all the way through. This time around Mercer nails it! Sick stuff that helps A Wake in Providence to create that sound they are going for. Production wise this is a lot cleaner than the previous albums, which works in its favor because there is so much going on. Any wrong steps here and the atmosphere could loose its meaning.

Deathcore banger after banger The Blvck Sun || The Blood Moon is giving me and on a few tracks like “Oblivion” there is even some clean vocals, which works! They don’t overdo it, it’s just there and makes you go “huh they nailed this too”. Having one of my favorite vocalists in Mark Poida (Aversions Crown, ex-I, Valiance) on that track helps out a lot too. Cj Mcmahon (Thy Art is Murder) also found the time to make a sweet guest appearance on “|The Blood Moon”. It’s not just the great guests that makes this deathcore party a major success to my ears. It’s the hard work, determination to create a quality varied, modern deathcore album while making the right changes and choices along the way that makes A Wake in Providence stand out in a genre that we know is very flooded.

This is nothing short but the best deathcore release in the first quarter of 2019, probably even the best you will hear all year. Last year I think I gave out two 5/5 scores all year, March has already made me give out two masterpiece. What a month! A Wake in Providence redefined themselves, creates an absolute beast with a new sound that’s miles ahead from their debut. I can only bow down to the black sun and the blood moon wishing it will let me bask in its darkness again and again.

We Are Obscurity – Chaos (Deathcore)

We Are Obscurity was formed by one of the most known names in deathcore Alex Terrible in 2014. The band only produced a few singles before he put the band to rest in order to focus on his then new project Slaughter To Prevail. Safe to say Slaughter To Prevail has turned into a big name within deathcore but We Are Obscurity still has some life in them as the founding guitarist Dimitry Mamedov resurrected the band along with Stanislav Savvateev and Ramones Korchevskiy who got the monumental task on filling in the vocals for Alex Terrible. What came out from the resurrection became one thing, Chaos!

If you like your deathcore fast and brutal then you will feel right at home with Chaos. There is no time to breath here as the beatdowns comes one after another crushing everything in its wake. With fast guitar riffs and thundering drums along with the slick production we are used to when it comes to deathcore it is a beastly sound perfect for getting your mosh on. Ramones Korchevskiy also does a great job with the vocals, his style is similar to Alex Terrible but is no pure clone. I like to think Korchevskiy as sort of a mix between Alex Terrible and Dan Watson. It’s no mean feat being compared to those guys of course so good job to Mamedov on finding a great replacement!

The album offer enough of variation, with the same hate and aggression, that you will want to get back to this 25 minute EP several times. I personally love when they add a bit of atmosphere to the chaos they unleash and for that the song “Hatred” is a perfect example, which easily became my most played track from the album along with “Find No Solace”. The synth backgrounds to start of with, utter mayhem that follows and drop at three minute mark on “Hatred” is what I usually go for in a song with both atmospheric and slam elements to it. The most brutal track on the album goes no doubt to “Misanthropy”. Now that’s a song you want on your gym to get them gains!

We Are Obscurity doesn’t add anything new to the scene, as it obviously has a lot of resemblance to what Slaughter to Prevail does but also Shrine of Malice, Until We Die, Shadow of Intent and Enterprise Earth (especially due to the album art which seems influenced by Embodiment) comes to mind. However it shows a band which resurrection proves to be a solid one where the duo can now continue working on creating evil, hard hitting deathcore. Sometimes that’s more than enough! I think this is just the start.

Sin Deliverance – Inquisition of Morality (Melodic Deathcore)

There is this unsigned deathcore band from Russia whose debut EP Inquisition of Morality I’ve been spinning on and off these past months, that band is called Sin Deliverance. Those that have seen The Metal Gamer best of 2018 list will know that I choose Samsara by The Breathing Process as the deathcore album of the year. A lot of the reason behind the choose is that I personally find blackened and melodic deathcore more memorable in the longrun as the whole atmosphere, use of symphonic elements just clicks with me. The same reasoning can be said of Sin Deliverance as they use the same formula and execute it really well.

The 25 minutes flies by with sweet riffs, great use of keyboard and some classic deathcore vocals. It may not be the most original album I’ve heard but at the same time Sin Deliverance pulls it off wickedly and as a debut this tells the group got a lot of talent in them. From the rainy piano intro to the ending of “Doomsday” I had a great time with this EP and as previously mentioned I’ve gone back to it several times, which in itself does say there is something to get back to. When I discovered Shadow of Intent and reviewed their debut Primordial I got the same feeling, which eventually turned out to become a big hit with the community. While I think Ben Duerr is a big difference maker (he also seems to network a lot) that separates Shadow of Intent from the rest Alexey Slivko also has a great vocal range which further down the line he could develop even more. In the end Inquisition of Morality might not create big ripples in the vast ocean of deathcore but I can see this being the start of greater things, they got the tools for it.

Another year another best of the year list! This one is long overdue as I planed to post this several weeks ago but something always came in the way. Some of you might know I also write for Swedish site Rocknytt and I’ve of course submitted a best of to them as well. Funeralglade – May the Funeral Begin (Melodic Death Metal)

Funeralglade-Pic-2

Hailing from Finland a five-man band named Funeralglade was formed a year ago. Since then they’ve worked to release their debut EP May the Funeral Begin whereas the time has come for me to review it. Funeralglade incorporate a lot of different genres into their music, goove metal, black metal and deathcore just being some of those but they are labelled as melodic death metal. May the Funeral Begin features six tracks and Funeralglade gives the listener an album filled with class riffs, vocals and drumming.

What makes me like the album more the more times I listen to it is the fact that all songs features new elements to them. The opener Shadow of Misery builds up the tempo nicely which gives you that crushing but melodical black metal feel. With Death (Only Way Out) being a more classic melodeath approach with some trash and black touches to it. Hollow then turns it more aggressive with symphonic elements into the mix, making this my favorite track on the album. The intermission Cadence of the Aching Breath adds more symphonic music, giving me the chills. Leading up to A Bedtime Story: Bloodlust which starts off like a powermetal song with the first riff and made me look if I was listening to the same album but that quickly turn into a fast paced death metal track with some added symphonic deathcore to it. Paincauser keep that sound alive and ends the album well. The whole packaging of the album with these six songs giving me different experiences is rather nice. If I could put their music in a box it would be with Carach Angren meeting Anaal Nathrakh and Shadow of Intent.

There are some flaws here and there but overall I had a good time with May the Funeral Begin. A good debut from Funeralglade they can build on.

Best of 2017 so far

Picking a top 10 is always hard, I personally try to mix it up with various genres as well. There were some albums which on any other day could be in this top 10 but this is what I am sticking with! Also just like last year I only choose albums I’ve reviewed. Meaning there are some albums that’s actually good and been out before this is written but I haven’t had the time to review them, hence they are not in the running. So here you go The Metal Gamer top 10 albums of 2017…..so far!

Shadow of Intent – Reclaimer (Deathcore)

1400x1400

Released the same day as Firespawn’s The Reprobate I had to make a tough choice which to review first. Since I’d review deathcore albums for half the week I thought it was time for some death metal then. That said it doesn’t necessarily mean I like this any less! It’s actually only been a year since Shadow of Intent dropped their debut album Primordial, the Halo (video game) themed melodic deathcore sound was perfect for me to have as one of the first review on The Metal Gamer. I didn’t have it in my top 20 of the year but that was honestly a miss, Primordial mainly missed out simply due to me forgetting how great it was and took in some albums on my list that I reviewed closer in time to when I was making the list. Oh well I guess that happens to a lot of people. So does Reclaimer live up to one of last years best releases?

They got the epic entry down with We Descend… orchestral setting joined with Ben Duerr’s growls from hell (or space in this case), sweet guitar plays and roaring drums. The orchestral elements are a lot more present on Reclaimer than on Primordial, which is great in my opinion as it adds more depth to the music. It also feels closer to the Halo series due to it, more of an epic battle kind of feeling. The use of clean vocals I was a bit scared how it would turn out but already when the single The Horror Within came out I knew there was nothing to worry about. He nails it! What else is new on Reclaimer? Oh Shadow of Intent managed to get some really class acts to feature on Reclaimer. Or how about Jason Evans (Ingested) and Dickie Allen (Infant Annihilator) joining their evil vile forces on The Catacombs? Aleksandr Shikolai (aka Alex Terrible from Slaughter to Prevail) continues to remain an active presence having featured in quite a few albums so far. He does a great job just as well here on The Gathering of All. Then we also have a vocalist from a band I recently started getting into Tom Barber from Lorna Shore on The Prophet’s Beckoning.

While I see those three songs as highlights on Reclaimer, Shadow of Intent pushes their sound even further even if those songs wouldn’t be on the album. Songs such as The Horror Within, The Forsaken Effigy and The Great Schism (instrumental song with sweet guitar, piano solos) are more than great examples of that. Primordial was a great debut, Reclaimer is, only one year later, even better and really shows the talent Shadow of Intent got. To be able to develop so much as a band in such a short amount of time is nothing short but greatness in the making. Who knows how far these guys can go? Maybe it’s time to bring Shadow of Intent into the discussion who can be crowned as the new deathcore kings soon? All hail the king Shadow of Intent. The best deathcore band to have spawned these past years.

April 28th was a wicked day for music, one of the best death metal and deathcore releases of the year out on the same day. Shadow of Intent’s sophomore album Reclaimer is out now as an independent release. A must have for any deathcore fan.

Lorna Shore – Flesh Coffin (Deathcore)

1400x1400

My friends I will be honest with but I’ve sinned. In the beginning I didn’t honestly like Lorna Shore all that much, wasn’t until The Underground (a metal group on facebook I can advise you to join) and especially Ben Duerr (Shadow of Intent vocalist) started writing about how great they were. I saw people getting tattoo’s of the Flesh Coffin cover and then I said “man I need to listen to this album”. Better late than never but here we are!

Lorna Shore have a really good mix of fast hard hitting riffs, wicked growls (Tom Barber has a wide range of growling styles), well-written evil lyrics, melodic at times and down-tempo elements (the Traitors kind). Songs like Denounce the Light are pure evil and features all of those things I just mentioned, quickly turning into a song I listen to daily. You also have the catchy course in The Astral Wake of Time that gets stuck in your head. FVNERAL MOON, the albums hit single, was the song that got me interested in Lorna Shore and it’s freaking great. I thought that song was going to be my favorite one on the album as it’s a good song that I’ve heard many times before coming into this album. However with tracks like Denounce the Light, Void and Infernum on the album it’s not even in the contest for favorite song. This in itself speaks of the high level Flesh Coffin brings to the table.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, 2017 is THE year for deathcore. The genre just keeps on giving great albums, a category Flesh Coffin easily falls into. Lorna Shore – Flesh Coffin is out now through Outerloop Records.
