Fractal Generator – Apotheosynthesis (Atmospheric Death Metal)

The Canadian trio (040118180514, 040114090512 and 102119200914) Fractal Generator calls their music Atmospheric Death Metal so I instantly jumped on yet another band that names themselves after a genre I haven’t really heard of. I personally would call it technical death metal but whatever really that’s not what I want to talk about. I am here to talk about how awesome Fractal Generator are!

This is sci-fi metal in the same kind of spacecraft Wormed makes their music. It’s brutal, got great riffs in it and a lyrical theme on space and time. This sci-fi journey is one you do not want to miss. From the very start Fractal Generator tell us how life, death, space and time is and my favorite track Human how cruel our race is. And I love every second of it. According to metal archives this album was originally an independent digital release in 2015 but I am very happy Everlasting Spew Records are releasing it this year as both a digital and physical release so people like me can get to know these hard hitting metalheads.

One thing I really liked on the album as a side note is that Reflections even uses Darth Vaders famous breathing as samples in it. Freaking awesome if I do say so myself. Apotheosynthesis is an album technical death metal fans would be wise to get, Canada has yet another great techdeath band coming for mankind.

Rapheumets Well – Enders Door (Progressive Death/Black Metal)

Are you ready for a sci-fi concept album? Follow the rogue travler Eryos and how he discovered an artifact that would change his place in cosmos forever. This one hour long journey will leave you wanting more of Eryos and his adventures. Rapheumets Well were formed in 2008, North Carolina USA, after changing name from Blue Man’s God (created 2002). Having had a very wide range of influences on their albums, experimenting in classical, ambience and metal music this band stands out. Enders Door is the bands third release after having told other stories within this multi-verse on Dimensions and The Exile.

One thing is certain when you listen to Rapheumets Well, it’s epic. Much like you find Dimmu Borgir’s symphonic black metal massive and sometimes overwhelms you with their orchestral music Rapheumets Well does the same. Differences are many though. The progressive elements and clean vocals (both female and male) makes you think about The Faceless more than Dimmu Borgir. There is also a lot of death metal influences in the music, still very symphonic, which bands such as Fleshgod Apocalypse are known for. The whole sci-fi take on all this is awesome and at times I think on movies such as Tron or Ghost in the Shell while listening to Enders Door. The different directions the songs take is also what makes Enders Door sick out from the rest. It feels like a movie in musical form, and it’s freaking epic!

I can recommend Rapheumets Well to anyone who is out for something a little bit different. It’s a great concept album with various of influences covering a wide range of genres. I would also love to see this band live, from what I’ve read they seem to make it like a play when performing their music. I can imagine it being a great experience in the veins of what Fleshgod Apocalypse or Carach Angren does.

Also with this review I will leave you guys for two weeks. Traveling to Tokyo tomorrow and I will not be reviewing any new albums while there. Hopefully I will get the chance to catch a concert on some of the local bands there though!

Shadow of Intent – Reclaimer (Deathcore)

Released the same day as Firespawn’s The Reprobate I had to make a tough choice which to review first. Since I’d review deathcore albums for half the week I thought it was time for some death metal then. That said it doesn’t necessarily mean I like this any less! It’s actually only been a year since Shadow of Intent dropped their debut album Primordial, the Halo (video game) themed melodic deathcore sound was perfect for me to have as one of the first review on The Metal Gamer. I didn’t have it in my top 20 of the year but that was honestly a miss, Primordial mainly missed out simply due to me forgetting how great it was and took in some albums on my list that I reviewed closer in time to when I was making the list. Oh well I guess that happens to a lot of people. So does Reclaimer live up to one of last years best releases?

They got the epic entry down with We Descend… orchestral setting joined with Ben Duerr’s growls from hell (or space in this case), sweet guitar plays and roaring drums. The orchestral elements are a lot more present on Reclaimer than on Primordial, which is great in my opinion as it adds more depth to the music. It also feels closer to the Halo series due to it, more of an epic battle kind of feeling. The use of clean vocals I was a bit scared how it would turn out but already when the single The Horror Within came out I knew there was nothing to worry about. He nails it! What else is new on Reclaimer? Oh Shadow of Intent managed to get some really class acts to feature on Reclaimer. Or how about Jason Evans (Ingested) and Dickie Allen (Infant Annihilator) joining their evil vile forces on The Catacombs? Aleksandr Shikolai (aka Alex Terrible from Slaughter to Prevail) continues to remain an active presence having featured in quite a few albums so far. He does a great job just as well here on The Gathering of All. Then we also have a vocalist from a band I recently started getting into Tom Barber from Lorna Shore on The Prophet’s Beckoning.

While I see those three songs as highlights on Reclaimer, Shadow of Intent pushes their sound even further even if those songs wouldn’t be on the album. Songs such as The Horror Within, The Forsaken Effigy and The Great Schism (instrumental song with sweet guitar, piano solos) are more than great examples of that. Primordial was a great debut, Reclaimer is, only one year later, even better and really shows the talent Shadow of Intent got. To be able to develop so much as a band in such a short amount of time is nothing short but greatness in the making. Who knows how far these guys can go? Maybe it’s time to bring Shadow of Intent into the discussion who can be crowned as the new deathcore kings soon? All hail the king Shadow of Intent. The best deathcore band to have spawned these past years.

April 28th was a wicked day for music, one of the best death metal and deathcore releases of the year out on the same day. Shadow of Intent’s sophomore album Reclaimer is out now as an independent release. A must have for any deathcore fan.

The Great Old Ones – EOD: A Tale of Dark Legacy (Post-Black Metal)

Sorry for no review yesterday, had a hangover of death after being on a Sonata Arctica concert and never really got into the mood of reviewing an album. I am now though and I continue with black metal because there’s just been so many good albums coming this year from that genre. Today is also an album I’ve had on my list for a long time but for some reason not got around to review it. The Great Old Ones is a French Post-Black Metal band that’s been going strong since they formed in 2009. EOD: A Tale of Dark Legacy is the bands third full-length following their best release Tekeli-li that got a lot of praise when it came out in 2014. Question is can they follow up on that success even with two out of five members being new (Charbonnier on bass and Edouard on guitar being new members)?

For those of you who don’t know The Great Old Ones are very powerful deities (such as Cthulhu and Yig) in the H.P. Lovecraft universe which is also where the band takes its influences from when writing songs. As you may know by now I enjoy myself a good H.P. Lovecraft themed band, it’s dark, horrifying and perfect for the more evil metal bands to take influences from. Which is exactly how EOD: A Tale of Dark Legacy starts. Searching for R. Olmstead – Introduction gives you shiver down your spine with the classical horror themed music you remember as a kid watching old horror movies late at night without your parents knowing to then blast of into madness with The Shadow over Innsmouth. If H.P. Lovecraft made music this would be it.

The whole album feels like a horror movie with it’s dark and mystic atmosphere. The vocals are just as wicked as before and the instrumental part, which I was afraid wouldn’t have the same high level anymore, still got it. It seems my concern was unjustified. If you like The Great Old Ones earlier work then you will be pleased with this one too, in my opinion it might even be better than Tekeli-li (ask me tomorrow and I might say the oposite, both really good though). If you haven’t heard these French horror-loving deities before then now is the time.

Valhalore – Voyage into Eternity (Folk/Viking Metal)

This is a journey, or as the album title says a Voyage into Eternity. Starting off with a storytelling voice and calm melodies it soothes the listeners mind. It eventually becomes a epic symphonic blast of melodies as it was Nightwish together with Eluveitie themselves recording this. Vocals ranges from the high and lows, growling and clean singing. With three members in the band sharing vocal duty it sure does give the album an extra twist and different ways of telling this story of Vikings. The ferocity in the music is like that of the berserker’s of old and the melodies clings on inside your head like the ballads from Blind Guardian or Amon Amarth. Across the Frozen Ocean for example really does make me think about the legendary song The Bard’s Song by Blind Guardian.

I get the feeling of going on adventures when listening to this album. It’s the sort of epic music that takes you to the epic worlds from Lord of the Rings, Witcher or Dragon Age. The use of various types of instruments like mandolin, cello and whistle puts that extra epic mark on Voyage into Eternity. To me Voyage of Eternity is the definition of epic folk music. Not only due to the use of various instruments with great melodies and riffs but also due to the great song-writing and great use of different vocals to deliver a sweet story. Plus the fact I love vikings, any story with vikings in it is a plus in my book!

Valhalore was a big surprise to me. It’s well produced and features so many elements I like in good music this is an instant classic for me. Fans of bands such as Ensiferum, Wintersun, Eluveitie, Blind Guardian and the likes take heed (and of course drink mead). Valhalore are here to stay and their debut Voyage into Eternity is one of the best releases so far this year. Voyage into Eternity is out now as an independent release.

Siegelord – Ascent of the Fallen (Melodic Death Metal)

Not too long ago I reviewed Winterhymn’s latest release Blood & Shadow. From Winterhymn Warg, Sieven and Ulfr left to form Siegelord in 2013 adding Therod on guitar. Even though the band has ties to Winterhymn the music differs quite a bit (my guess is that may even have been the reason they left to form Siegelord). Whereas Winterhymn plays folk metal mixed with black, death and power metal Siegelord is more towards melodic death metal with hints of black metal. Epic battles and mythology awaits the listener as Siegelord grants you a battlefield filled with bloodshed. Think of bands like Ex Deo, Amon Amarth and Dissection then you know which direction Siegelord are going.

While listening to Ascent of the Fallen I can’t help but draw a lot of parallels to the latest offering from Amon Amarth, Jomsviking. A melodic death metal concept album has been done before of course but this album has more in common with Jomsviking than anything else I’ve heard. The groovy riffs, harsh vocals and tales of war and battle simply makes me think of Amon Amarth. Like when I hear A Grim Destiny which then leads to Unkillable I can’t help but think of the opening track of Jomsviking, First Kill. This isn’t anything negative as I had Jomsviking set as my favorite album last year and if you also enjoyed it then you will also have a great time with Ascent of the Fallen. Siegelord delivers a dark fantasy world that even Tolkien would deem worthy.

Looking for a tale of epic proportions? A tale that involves war, betrayal and the birth to a new dark conqueror. If you are then Siegelord’s debut album Ascent of the Fallen will keep you more than occupied. A great debut and the future is bright for the Siegelords. Definitely an album that didn’t get the attention it deserved during 2016.

Miserist – Miserist (Experimental Black/Death Metal)

When I get a promo labelled with experimental black or death metal I instantly think about my latest run in with the genre Veilburner. A band that still gives me nightmares. However there is a part of me that likes this scary stuff and wants to feel unease while listening. There is no better word to describe Miserist’s selftitled debut but gnarly. Miserist is an instrumental album that could definitely be the soundtrack to horror games such as Resident Evil or the movie Insidious. The fourth track Horror Infinitum is a perfect example on how Insidious like to incorporate music into horror.

What makes this debut even scarier is the fact that Miserist got the whole idea for the album from a documentary about a mental asylum for kids. The whole concept on the album is about how it would feel to be there, trapped in dark rooms and treated like an animal. Misery, darkness, death and horror.

The six tracks also represents different subjects from the asylum. Skin, Mold and Flame was written as Miserist imagines how a room would be like for the kids. In their (members being anonymous I am not sure if it’s a he, she or more) own words “Skin on the doorways and windows from people trying to escape, mold everywhere because it’s never cleaned, and flame because once all the kids died they burnt it down.” Continuing Miserist is the name taken from what they call the head of the asylum. Misery Generator. VIII is the average age of the children. Horror Infinitum that there is endless horror at the asylum. Lung Rust that the kids feel they can’t breathe at the asylum due to toxic fumes and diseases. Last but not least Narikuntu, which is about the asylum in general.

Having all this with you while listening to the album will make you feel scared, horrified and at unease. Which is exactly what I expected from the album.
