Guys guess what? My top 3 favorite Finnish metal acts, in no order, are Amorphis, Ensiferum and Moonsorrow (I know very different genres those three) and I’ve not found any act that truly creates a Pagan/Black metal sound than Moonsorrow does (some can get close though). Holy shit though, the day has arrived! Havukruunu has to be fans of their fellow countrymen as their sound feels like they could be a sisterband to Moonsorrow. This to me is a huge surprise and I instantly fall in love with Havukruunu just like I did with Moonsorrow years back. The band has been active since 2013 and Kelle Surut Soi is the bands second full-length release after having released Havulinnaan in 2015, which received a lot of praise. Kelle Surut Soi means “for whom the sorrows sing”, so be ready for an pagan black metal ride filled with sorrow and darkness.
Every song on this album is a masterpiece in itself. However this album is meant to be experienced as a whole, believe me. So sit back, take a beer and just take in the atmosphere and genius musicanship Havukruunu offers you. Finnish speaker or not, this album is great nevertheless for the atmosphere it creates alone. If you know Finnish though I am sure it gets even better. After listening to this album you can be sure I will listen to their debut Havulinnaan as well and try to catch them live sometime. A band with this much talent and in a neighbour country I just have to witness live.
Seeing I dig this album as a whole and is meant to be listened to as a whole it was hard for me to pick a few favorite tracks. However I do think Jo Näkyvi Pohjan Portit, Myrskynkutsuja and Kelle Surut Soi stands out. If you’re as big of a Moonsorrow fan as I am then this is definitely a contender for album of the year. Kelle Surut Soi is out now through Naturmacht Productions.
